With rapid growth in tourism, Argentina has eclipsed Brazil to become the most popular tourist destination in South America.
Argentina became the most popular tourist destination in South America after receiving 5.3 million foreign visitors last year. Launching the Tourism Strategic Plan 2020, the Minister of Tourism, Enrique Meyer, mentioned that tourism showed “three times the world growth (sector) and was higher than emerging countries and was ranked first as a South American destination and fourth in the Americas”. Furthermore, this number represents a cumulative growth of 78 percent since 2003.
Brazil was second in the region with 5.2 million foreign tourists last year, according to the website of Ministry of Tourism. Meyer estimated that by 2020 “some eight million foreigners” would visit Argentina.
In addition to its varied geography, Argentina has exploded in recent years due to the popularity of tango and also gay tourism.
